Over 2,500 individual reefs make up the Great Barrier Reef, from shallow fringing reefs, to mid-shelf reefs and right out to Australia’s continental shelf and beyond. Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and tours depart daily.
Reefs
Coral gardens surround the Great Barrier Reef’s 900 islands. At Green Island, Fitzroy Island and Low Isles you can walk off the beach, into the sea and snorkel in the shallows with starfish, clams and colourful fish, while divers take a tender to offshore reefs, teeming with life. You might even see a sea turtle.
Islands
The cays are created by the shifting sands, thanks to the ocean waves and tidal currents. White sand and shallow, clear water with coral bommies, giant clams, anemones and more. A beautiful place to explore.
